If you’re looking for an early-game challenge in Minecraft, I’ve got a good recommendation for you. Strap on your best armour, pack some food, a trusty bow, some arrows and a sharp sword, and hunt down a dark forest or pale garden biome.

In these dense forests, if you’re lucky, you might happen upon a huge, dark structure looming out of the trees. This imposing edifice is known as a woodland mansion, and as well as being a great test of your combat skills, it also happens to be our structure of the month.

When you hear the word “mansion” you probably think “luxury” – and yes, the building is indeed pretty fancy. There are libraries, dining rooms, forges, storage rooms, and weird giant chicken statues. But there are also signs of a darker intent here. Jails, arenas, and strange chambers with giant altars where rituals can take place.

Before you notice much of that, though, you’ll likely be set upon by the mansion’s inhabitants, who... well, let’s just say that they don’t like outsiders. Mansions are packed with vindicator illagers led by evokers, and the interior is dark enough that other nasties can spawn in there too.

But if you’re feeling brave, then there are plenty of rewards to be found. The mansion is packed with chests containing all sorts of useful early game resources and even some rarer items like music discs and armor trim templates. Sometimes there are also additional secret rooms – which if you can find them means even more loot.

Once you’ve evicted the residents of a woodland mansion, it’s up to you what you do with it. Many of the rooms inside are set up in useful ways for players who don’t want to do a lot of tedious building work – there are farms, storage chambers, bedrooms, conference rooms and even map rooms. Oh, and a bunch of allays to do your bidding.

You could even start to customise a mansion to your own needs – knocking down the interior walls or building extensions to make the rooms the size and shape you need. Perhaps you need a potion brewing factory, or a larger forge. No-one’s going to complain if you modify things a bit. Well, maybe the illagers that lived there before, but they’re gone now.

Essentially, you should think of a woodland mansion as a giant canvas on which you can express yourself – either in fierce combat against the inhabitants, or in rebuilding after you’ve cleared the place out. Or both, of course. Don’t expect that doing either of those things will be easy – but you can be sure that you’ll be proud of the results.
