If you get a falling block in 1.12.2, and then update your world to 1.18, you can keep the falling block alive, you can move it around, and you can make it land while also duping it with end portals to still keep the falling block. If you have a single falling block you can place it down as many times as you want anywhere in the overworld and end dimensions. Therefore even those falling blocks which do not drop as an item have applications in 1.18.

The generic falling block swap method will probably be published within a month. The theory has been completely figured out, and now it is just work to put all the parts of the setup together. It will be using 2 async observer lines to perform word tearing with the hashmap palette and a falling block swap simultaneously.
